Yandex takes over its road traffic data provider
2008-06-30
One of the leading portals in the country, Yandex.ru, has acquired its recent provider of road traffic data, Smilink.
The Smilink information project was created in 2001 for PDA users, who could buy a special add-on service and gain access to news and information on the stock exchange and traffic jams.
Over time, Smilink started to specialise in collecting and analysing road traffic data. When cooperation between the portal and provider started in 2006 with the launch of the Yandex.Traffic project, and the provider shared its data so it became available free of charge, Smilink’s activity lost its relevance and Yandex decided to buy the company out. The new owner now plans to expand the traffic news service geographically (it is already operating in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Kiev) and will not resign from Smilink’s additional services such as SMS, ICQ and e-mail info.
The value of the deal has not been disclosed but analysts say its value was approx. €6-10m ($10-15m). Yandex.Traffic has become the leader among such projects in Russia.
