ICT glossary3G (UMTS) The third-generation mobile telephony. UMTS users can make voice calls, have access to the internet and may use a range of value added services (e.g. make video calls, watch movies). In Poland, there are more and more places, especially in urban areas, where 3G services can be used. ADSL Technology which enables fast internet access over telephone lines. In Poland, ADSL services are offered mainly by TP SA under the trade name "Neostrada". ARPU Average revenue per user. BI Business Intelligence. Applications and technologies used to collect and analyse data (using the, so called, data warehouses) to support decision making processes. BPO Business process outsourcing. A sort of outsourcing which involves contracting the operations and responsibilities of a specific business process to a third party service provider. Broadband Fast internet access. BSA Bitstream access. Wholesale access to the local loop, used for the purposes of sale of broadband data transmission services. In other words, internet access services are bought from TP SA at a wholesale price and then resold to TP SA's clients. BSA was launched in Poland at the end of 2006. BSA services are now offered by several alternative operators (such as Netia, GTS Energis). CaTV Cable television. Computer market The total value of computers (desktops, laptops and servers) sold by manufacturers. CRM Software used to support customer relationship management. Data transmission Data transmission and internet access services, offered to the corporate sector (telecoms and operators). Datacom equipment Also: data communications equipment (DCE). Devices that provide access or implement communications facilities (move information) and are used in data transmission. They are placed between the data terminal equipment (DTE) and a data transmission circuit (DTC). DLD Domestic long distance calls. DLISP Data transmission, line rental and internet services provision. It is one of the three main segments of the telecoms market in Poland, right after mobile and fixed-line telephony. E-commerce Also electronic commerce - an electronic trade system of buying and selling products or services over electronic systems such as the internet or other computer networks. EDGE Internet access technology in GSM networks, also referred to as 2.5G. EDGE offers higher capacity than GPRS but lower than 3G. ERP Enterprise Resource Planning. Software used to support the processes of planning and managing enterprise resources; ERP systems comprise a group of compatible applications (modules) which support the main business functions. Fixed-line telephony market This refers to overall revenues from standard fixed-line networks and services such as installation and rental fees, calls, revenues from fixed IP telephony services and interconnection revenues. FVNO Fixed virtual network operator. A company that provides a fixed-line telephony service but does not have all the network infrastructure required. Instead, it has an agreement signed with a telecommunications carrier to buy services on a wholesales basis (e.g. BSA, WLR) or else it offers its services in the carrier's network via prefix and/or preselection. Hardware market The total value of all computers (desktops, laptops and servers), printers, monitors, projectors, navigation devices, components and other equipment, sold on the market by manufacturers. ILD International long distance call. ISP Internet services provider. ISP market Internet services provision market - the value of internet access services supplied by internet services providers. IT consulting Phincludes all the services related to advising clients on how to use IT resources optimally, also comparing/planning/judging/showing strong and weak points of particular IT solutions before actual implementation. IT infrastructure Physical hardware used to interconnect computers and users. It includes transmission media such as telephone lines, cable television lines, satellites, antennas, as well as routers, aggregators, repeaters, and other devices that control transmission paths. Infrastructure also includes the software used to send, receive, and manage the signals that are transmitted. IT integration includes all the services related to linking existing subsystems/software applications into one system, also includes computer network/hardware integration if it is necessary. IT training iincludes the provision of IT courses/seminars/workshops/certifications both for businesses and individuals. IT market Information technology market - the total value of merchandise and services sold by IT companies. It consists of hardware, software and IT services. IT offshoring The process of relocating a company's business activities from one country to another in order to reduce costs. IT outsourcing One of the IT market segments which refers to subcontracting some activities to a third party company. The key activities of IT outsourcing are web application and website management, help desk/call centre, IT network management, hardware management, collocation and hosting, BPO. IT services market The total value of IT services such as integration, outsourcing, implementation services, maintenance, consulting, training, IT infrastructure development, network design and development, etc that are provided and sold by IT firms. IT&T IT & Telecommunications. LAN Also: local area network. A group of computers and associated devices that share a common communications line or wireless link, covering a small physical area. Line rental Service provided by operators which have their own backbone networks to corporations and other operators, usually smaller ISPs, so that they can rent lines, for example to have access to the Internet. LLU Local loop unbundling. Local loop or sub-loop can be used to provide voice and non-voice services. Management support systems A subset of a management information system (MIS), which extends the information retrieval capabilities of the end-users with query and analysis functions for database searching, generating 'what if' scenarios, and other similar purposes. Mobile telephony market This refers to overall revenues from voice services supplied on wireless communication networks, interconnection revenues and all types of non-voice and value-added services concerning mobile telephony. Monitor market The total value of monitors (LCD, CRT) sold by manufacturers. MTR Mobile termination rate. In other words, operator from whose network a voice call is initiated is charged a fee at a mobile termination rate by the operator to whose network the user connects. MVNE Mobile virtual network enabler. A company that provides infrastructure and services to enable an MVNO to offer its services. It does not have any relationship with the end-users. MVNO Mobile virtual network operator. MVNO is an operator which has made an arrangement with one of the existing operators for buying mobile services at wholesale prices, to later resell them on the market under its own brand name. A dozen or so MVNOs operate in Poland now (e.g. mBank mobile, MyAvon, MobilKing, Carrefour Mova). Network equipment Refers to many types of devices used in the process of ICT network construction, support and operation e.g. switches, routers, cabling, transceivers, servers, firewalls, storage equipment, UPS, wireless, memory, KVM, etc. Pay TV market The total revenues from subscription-based services, available in different segments such as the digital satellite, cable TV (analogue cable, digital TV) and IPTV markets. PBX Also: private branch exchange. A telephone exchange that serves a particular business or office as opposed to one that a common carrier or telephone company operates for many businesses or for the general public. PDA devices Personal digital assistant devices (also palmtop computers) - a sort of handheld computer device. PDAs commonly have colour screens and audio capabilities, enabling them to be used as mobile phones (smartphones), web browsers, or portable media players. PDAs have touch screens for entering data, a memory card slot for data storage. Many PDAs can access the internet, intranets or extranets. The software typically required by a PDA includes an appointment calendar, a to-do list, an address book for contacts and some sort of note program. Penetration (density) The number of lines/users per 100 people in a given country. For example, the mobile telephony penetration is the number of mobile phone users per 100 inhabitants. In other words, penetration (density) is a population's proportion which experience something. For example, broadband penetration among households is the percentage of households which have broadband internet. PMR's Telecommunications Climate Indicator The index calculated by PMR on the basis of the answers provided by large and middle-sized telecoms that gives a picture of the situation on the telecommunications market. It is an average of assessments provided by respondents during interviews of the company's situation in the past and current year. Its value ranges from "-2" to "+2". Printing equipment market The total value of printing devices, such as printers (laser, inkjet, dot-matrix) and multifunctional printing devices (laser, inkjet) sold by manufacturers. SCM solutions Also: supply chain management solutions. A group of software applications designed to improve the whole production process, ranging from finding components for making a product/service, to delivering it to customers. Software implementation The total value of licences and software upgrades provided by IT companies. It consists of operating systems and office software, games and educational softwaralso deployment, includes all the services involved in getting new software or hardware operating properly in its environment, including installation, configuration, running and testing. Telecommunications devices market The total value of the merchandise sold on the market such as telephones, cordless phones, cellular (mobile) phones, pagers, fax machines, etc. excluding all passive equipment. Telecommunications equipment market The total value of merchandise such as end user equipment, mobile handsets, fixed-line handsets, faxes, audio and video conferencing systems as well as network equipment sold. Telecommunications market Also: telecoms market. The total value of the services provided by the telecommunications operators and other companies present on the market (e.g. CaTV networks, ISPs) as well as the value of telecommunications equipment and services related to telecoms network construction. The telecommunications services market consists of the mobile telephony market, fixed-line telephony market, data transmission, line rental and ISP market (DLISP). Urząd Komunikacji Elektronicznej (UKE, Office of Electronic Communications) The regulator of the telecoms market in Poland. UKE supervises companies operating on the Polish telecoms market. It also issues permits and licences and makes sure that fair competition principles are observed. Value added services Non-core services, referred to as service options that are complimentary or ancillary to a core service offering. They are especially popular in the telecoms industry by offering a service that adds value to the standard service (phone calls) and are supplied by either the operator or a value-added service provider (VASP). Examples of a VAS are: entertainment and information services (mobile locations services, mobile communities, mobile TV), mobile finances (micropayments, m-banking), mobile marketing, video calls, etc. VoIP Voice-over-IP. Telephone services over the Internet (rather than via switched telephone networks). The cost of VoIP calls is usually lower than that of standard (especially of international long distance) calls. The problem is the quality, which is still lower than that of traditional calls. VoIP operators Voice over Internet Protocol operators. Providers of the set of facilities and services which are used to manage the delivery of voice information over the internet. There are a few forms of access to VoIP telephone services: scratch cards/access numbers, instant messengers, VoIP gateway/telephone, corporate VoIP telephone systems (hosted VoIP systems, managed VoIP services, IP PBX). Wi-Fi Access to the Internet over radio lines. Wi-Fi is available at hotspots (at base stations, i.e. radio receiver and transmitter), where one can have wireless access to the Internet (radio waves are used instead of cable). The coverage of a typical hotspot is several hundred metres (in diameter). WiMAX Access to the Internet over radio lines. WiMAX is gaining popularity among telecoms operators (also in Poland), which seek to avoid the cost of developing traditional cable infrastructure. WiMAX offers far greater coverage than Wi-Fi (from several to several dozen kilometres). One of the key operators building up WiMAX networks in Poland is Netia. WLAN Also: wireless local area network. A network that links two or more computers (devices) to enable communication between devices in a limited area. WLR Wholesale line rental. WLR is the wholesale access to the local loop, used to sell fixed-line services. In other words, WLR offers the possibility to buy packages of phone services from TP SA at a wholesale price, to resell them to TP SA customers. WLR was launched in Poland in 2007. It is offered by several alternative operators now. |
